Uncoordinated Efforts Choke Anti-Corruption Crusade

Analysts have said the lack of coordination among anti-corruption units in the country has negatively affected the anti-corruption campaign.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (Sacu), as well as the Police Anti-Corruption Unit (Pacu), are some of the organisations seeking to end corruption.

Speaking to Zim Morning Post, an anonymous analyst said there has been confusion on how each unit should operate. The analyst said:

At times a person is arrested by Sacu which then hands over the matter to the police without the knowledge of Zacc. When Zacc is asked they profess ignorance not only of the arrest but the whole matter which will be under investigation. This compromises the two bodies’ work and the fight against corruption.

SACU was assembled by President Mnangagwa upon his ascension to power in 2017 and is housed in the Office of the President.

The unit was mandated to investigate the extensive rot that rocked the administration of Zimbabwe’s founding leader, the late Robert Mugabe.

There is a blurred or no line to mark SACU’s cope of tasks and as observed above this resulted in the unit clashing with ZACC.

Corruption is said to be leading factors choking efforts to transform the economy.

In 2019, President Mnangagwa confirmed reports which suggested that potential investors are being scared off by government and ZANU PF officials who ask for huge kickbacks as a passport for tenders.
