Teachers Now On Opposition Mission – MP

28 October 2020

ZANU PF legislator for Buhera South, Joseph Chinotimba has said striking teachers are on the payroll of the opposition.

His remarks come as teachers are refusing to return to work demanding the restoration of their 2018 salaries, around USD500, and better working conditions.

Chinotimba made the remarks in Parliament on Tuesday saying the industrial action had adversely affected learners. He said:

I rise on a point of privilege on the issue of schoolchildren. I wanted to ask tomorrow (today), but this has become a concern to us. In my opinion, teachers are no longer on strike, but are on an opposition mission.

Teachers, in my opinion, are on the payroll of the opposition. Our children are not going to school. If they go to school, they are not learning anything.

The teachers are being paid by one of the biggest opposition parties in Zimbabwe to make this nation ungovernable. It is better for the teachers to stay home.

The absence of teachers in school since reopening on 28 September has seen learners engaging in immoral activities such as sexual intercourse, smoking and fighting.

Teachers are currently earning around USD30 and have said they are incapacitated to execute their duties and responsibilities.
