Husband Set On Fire For Asking Why Wife Came Home Late

A woman from Mt Darwin has appeared before Bindura Magistrate’s Court facing attempted murder charges after she allegedly locked her husband inside their bedroom and set it on fire following a domestic dispute.

The court was told that the dispute started after the husband Chamunorwa Shonhiwa (38) asked her, Yolanda Muchiri (28) where she was to come home late.

Prosecutor Mr Edward Katsvairo told the court that on October 23 this year, Shonhiwa arrived home at around 7pm, but Muchiri was not there.

When she finally arrived two hours later, Shonhiwa inquired where she was coming from, but he was not happy with her answer, resulting in an altercation.

The husband went to sleep in their bedroom which was set ablaze moments later. Shonhiwa rushed to the door and realised that it had been locked from outside.

He eventually managed to break the door and got out. Shonhiwa, unfortunately, sustained serious burns on his back as he was trying to save property inside the bedroom.

Muchiri, who was outside, told her husband that he was lucky because she wanted him burnt to ashes. Property worth $37 000 was destroyed in the fire.

Bindura magistrate Ms Moreblessing Makati remanding her in custody pending trial.
