Harare Resumes Water Production

Harare mayor His Worship Councillor Jacob Mafume said that production of water at the city’s water treatment plant, Morton Jaffray Waterworks has resumed.

This comes after Harare City Council announced last week that residents will have a dry weekend as it had ceased water production due to a lack of water-treatment chemicals.

In a statement posted on his social media channels on Sunday morning, Mafume announced that high-density suburbs such as Mbare and Sunningdale as well as industrial areas had started to receive the precious liquid. Said Mafume:

Production of water has resumed at Morton Jeffray Mbare, Sunningdale and key industrial clients are already receiving water.

Further supplies of chemicals from Zimphos are expected at 12 midday to increase production.

We also working on a plan that includes adjusting tariffs. A payment plan and a financial strategy that will prevent our suppliers failing to supply key chemicals.

We also need to adjust cost to match inflation and also work on prepaid meters or efficient billing.

Harare has been experiencing intermittent water cuts over the past few years due to a shortage of chemicals needed to purify its heavily-polluted supply dams, Chivero and Manyame.

Most of the treated water does not reach customers as it is lost through broken pipes which have outlived their usefulness.
